Who fans who are interested in the Target novelisations might like to note that there is an excellent 20-minute documentary about Malcolm Hulke and his role in starting off the range, plus a look at each of his contributions to it, on the new DVD set of The War Games - if, that is, you need another reason to go and get it.
This makes it two such documentaries in a matter of weeks, since Mark Gatiss's documentary on the range as a whole, On the Outside it Looked Like an Old Fashioned Police Box, was broadcast on 23 June. (And if you missed it then and haven't managed to get hold of it since, let me know and I will see what can be worked out.)

Japan's Prime Minister Taro Aso will call a general election for 30 August after poor local poll results in Tokyo.

1. Never piss off a bard, for your name is funny and can be sung to the tune of Greensleeves. Has anyone not heard yet that United Airlines breaks guitars?
2. Dude watching with the Brontës; I always did like Anne.
3. Nooooooooo! It's Rubberduckzilla!
4. Oh, my my my, verrrry nice K/S fan video, lyrics NSFW, must go fan myself now.

These are the current activities of flora in my yard.
Near end of bloom: red clover, coriander, feverfew
Full bloom: petunias, marigolds, blue lobelia, pansies, torenia, moss rose, snapdragons, zinnias, white clover, million bells, tomatoes, pink echinacea, white echinacea, milkweed, Queen Anne's lace
Beginning bloom: black-eyed susan, Mexican hat, tickseed coreopsis
Green fruit: Criterion apple, birdgift apple, tomatoes
Fruit starting to ripen: blackberries, tomatoes
Ripe fruit: mulberry, rugosa roses, blackberries
I have picked the first few blackberries. The little ones, the darrow blackberries, ripen first. The bigger ones are still dark pink.

I also picked the first of the Black Prince tomatoes, which had a nice dark scent.
The rose hips are ripe, but the Japanese beetles are munching on them and the rest of the rose bushes. *sigh* At least it keeps most of them off the fruit I intend to eat.

Dear Insectivores: Those things there? Are food. I understand they are strange to you, but I affirm that they are indeed insects and, to you, edible. Eat, drink, and be merry. Please.

Went to get my Australian driver's license today. (Much to my surprise, within three months of getting permanent residency, people from certain overseas countries including the U.S. can get an Australian drivers license without having to take a written test or driving exam!) As usual, the photo sucks (I look either drunk or hungover and possibly both) and the taking of it seemed to me to be a gaping hole in Australia ID security. The photo station is separate from where you show your ID, so theoretically anyone could present legal ID, get approved for a license, and then give the paperwork to someone else and have a different person's photo on the license.
The capper to the adventure, though, was when I ducked into an upscale consignment store I passed on the way to the tram. I disgraced myself inside when I flipped through a rack, spotted a Sears "Classic Elements" turtleneck, and laughed out loud when I saw this ( price tag )

Five countries prepare to sign an agreement on the long-planned Nabucco gas pipeline, linking the Caspian Sea to Europe.
A couple times per year the New York Times calls me up asking for an Op-Ed column on some technology topic. I don’t know how they found me but I’ve been writing these pieces since 1995. I think they call because I’m good at meeting tight deadlines. Lord knows that if there was a piece I actually wanted to get in the Times (my idea, not theirs) I have no confidence that I could get them to run it. Op-Ed at the Times — at least to me — is a sort of black box.
Here’s the column they asked for on Google’s Chrome OS: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/13/opinio
The opinions expressed, as always, are ruthlessly my own.

Did Judge Sonia Sotomayor say that 'the time has come to end white male oppression by castrating every white male'?
"When the Evilbad Cartel fired a missile into the home of Anton Hollick, there was one thing they didn't count on. Joe Kuzenza. Now the Evilbad Cartel face a man that missile couldn't kill. With him is his companion Rolphie, a talking dog uplifted by Hollick. Together, they and their AI sidekicks are looking for some Wild Justice."</p>
Well, maybe that's not quite what Transhuman Space: Personnel Files 3 - Wild Justice is about. I dare you, though, to read the synopsis and the title and not have that sort of movie trailer pop into your head. The book does contain write ups for Joe, his dog, and the AIs they share wacky adventures with, and it does explain their backstories, but where you take it from there is strictly up to you.</p>
I, for example, decided that "Evilbad Cartel" was a suitable name for my game. I suspect (or, at least, hope) you can do a fair sight better.</p>
Also, Munchkin Level Counter!
Sure, it's not an e23 thing, but it is a computer-related thingie. And if that's not good enough for me to shill it, then I ain't an duly-elected ad writer for SJ Games! So, what's the Munchkin Level Counter? It's an "app," as the kids say, for that iPhone doohickey. At its most basic, it keeps track of your levels during a game of Munchkin. Certainly handy, but there's more to it than that.</p>
See, it also offers up Boons! What's a Boon? Well, once per game, you can ask your all-powerful Munchkin Level Counter to bestow upon you the power to smite your foes, crush your opponents, and generally make a mess of anyone daring to cross your path. And that's for both Munchkin and Munchkin Quest. And if that's not enough, the Boons go up to level 20, if you're feeling Epic.</p>
But wait! There's more! You also get a counter for Chez Geek and SPANC, too! And if that's not enough, we also included a generic counter for . . . whatever! So exciting! Exclamation points!</p>
